The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased following a devastating incident that occurred on the Awka-Onitsha Expressway on Friday night. In a tragic turn of events, a female pedestrian lost her life after being struck by a speeding driver along the expressway.

The incident, as reported by the state Command of the FRSC, involved an unidentified driver operating a Toyota Hiace commercial bus without a registration number. The driver, reportedly traveling towards Upper Iweka, Onitsha, was observed to be driving at an excessive speed, leading to the fatal collision with the pedestrian.

State FRSC Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi, emphasized that the primary cause of the accident was the reckless speeding of the driver involved. Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted the horrifying moment when the speeding vehicle collided with the pedestrian before hastily fleeing from the area. 

Prompt response from the FRSC rescue team ensured the swift transportation of the victim to Toronto Mortuary, where her demise was confirmed by medical professionals.

In light of this tragic incident, Irelewuyi issued a stern warning to motorists, urging them to exercise caution and restraint, especially during adverse weather conditions such as the ongoing rainy season. 

He emphasized the critical importance of adhering to specified speed limits and exercising vigilance while navigating the roads to prevent such avoidable tragedies from reoccurring.

The FRSC remains committed to promoting road safety awareness and implementing measures to mitigate the risks associated with reckless driving behaviors. As the nation mourns the loss of another precious life, the FRSC urges all road users to prioritize safety and responsibility while traversing the highways.
