France’s Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has called for a precise European Union (EU) definition of lab-grown meat, emphasizing it doesn’t align with the French diet.

Last month, France, Austria, and Italy initiated a “culinary alliance” to debate synthetic meat, which currently lacks EU approval from the EFSA. Austria and Italy advocate for a public consultation and impact study, along with clear labeling if approved for consumption. Proponents argue lab-grown meat can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve animal welfare.

Italy has already imposed a ban, contrasting with the approved status in the United States and Singapore, requiring EU authorization for “novel food” products.

Attal told a news conference cultured meat was “not part of what we understand by French diet” which is why France wanted “clear legislation at the European level to determine what lab-grown meat is”.
