FIFA announced on Wednesday that it has opened an investigation into racist chants by Argentina players following their Copa America victory.

The governing body of world football is examining a video that surfaced on social media, where offensive chants were heard from the Argentine team bus after their win over Colombia in Miami.

A FIFA spokesperson stated, “FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into.

FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone, including players, fans, and officials.”

The chants were captured during a live video posted by Enzo Fernandez, a Chelsea and Argentina midfielder.

Some players, including Fernandez, were heard singing a chant that dates back to the 2022 World Cup final, where Argentina defeated France.

The song contains homophobic insults and targets France’s star striker, Kylian Mbappe.

In response, the French Football Federation complained to FIFA regarding the chants.

Chelsea Football Club also took swift action by initiating an internal disciplinary procedure against Fernandez, who is the most expensive transfer in Premier League history.

Fernandez has since issued a public apology.

Chelsea stated, “Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable.

We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.

The Club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure.”

FIFA’s investigation continues as the organization aims to address and eradicate discriminatory behaviour in football.
