The Federal government has introduced a comprehensive five-year Strategy and Implementation Plan (2023-2027) known as “Vision to Action,” focusing on addressing emerging public health threats and evolving challenges. Aligned with the health sector’s ministerial agenda, health security takes center stage in this initiative.

The strategy outlines seven goals, 41 objectives, and 225 activities for the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), showcasing a collaborative effort between the Federal government, State and Local governments, private sector, and development partners. This collective approach aims to enhance and transform the nation’s public health security.

During the launch in Abuja, Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, the Director General of NCDC, highlighted the strategy’s emphasis on systems, scaling, and sustainability, employing the Strategic, Ambitious, Speed, and Scale (SASS) approach. The goal is to accelerate the impact of health security interventions, with Nigeria serving as a model for other African countries.

Adetifa attributed the success of NCDC Strategy 2.0 to lessons learned from the 2017-2021 plan, enabling the agency to build on strengths, address gaps, and embrace innovation. Notably, Nigeria’s response to COVID-19 has been commendable, reflected in the improvement of its Joint External Evaluation (JEE) from 39% in 2018 to an impressive 54% in 2023. Nigeria is now the third country globally to undergo a second JEE.

The 2023, 2nd JEE marks a significant achievement, propelling Nigeria to second in Africa and third globally. The launch of the NCDC 5-year Strategic Plan (2023-2027) incorporates
