The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumers, fostering fair competition, and ensuring product safety in the market.

Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, Acting Executive Chairman of FCCPC, reaffirmed this commitment in an interview with journalists following a surveillance exercise conducted by the commission at several steel companies in Lagos and Ogun states on Friday.

Abdullahi explained that intelligence and surveillance reports gathered by the commission pointed to anti-competitive practices among certain companies.

“This prompted our visit to three of these companies to inspect their operations, review their records, and analyze ten of their products,” he stated.

“We are determined to uncover any false, misleading, or deceptive practices that could endanger consumers,” he emphasized.

He highlighted a significant issue observed, noting discrepancies in product specifications where consumers purchasing 12mm rods often received 10mm rods instead, contributing to structural failures.

“Safeguarding the public is a paramount responsibility, and such deceptive practices are unacceptable,” Abdullahi emphasized.

He stressed the importance of rigorous inspections and transparency in operations. “We are scrutinizing their processes to detect any shortcuts. If we find evidence of misconduct, we will enforce the law to its fullest extent,” he added.
