Reflecting on Nasir El Rufai’s Impact on Nigeria, By Tunde Akingbondere

NEWS DIGEST – In a startling turn of events, Nasir El Rufai, a prominent figure known for his intellectual prowess and potential to spearhead innovative ideas within President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has been abruptly sidelined. The news of his abrupt exit raises questions about the influence of an emerging power clique within President Tinubu’s cabinet.

El Rufai, celebrated for his book “Accidental Public Servant” and his First-Class distinction from Ahmadu Bello University, once earned the prestigious “Barewa Old Boys’ Association Academic Achievement” award. Yet, the unexpected downfall of this significant figure highlights the clout of a newfound cabal in President Tinubu’s administration.

Ironically, President Tinubu had previously spoken highly of El Rufai, even urging him to interrupt his academic pursuits abroad and join forces for the collective betterment of Nigeria. This abrupt shift in fortune raises concerns about the sway this supposed cabal holds over the President’s decisions.

Personally, my admiration for El Rufai began when I acquired his autobiography during my secondary school years. His tale of extraordinary accomplishments at Barewa College, inspired by Mr. Dehinnugbo, the sports master, resonated deeply. This educator, also remembered for influencing my father’s generation at Olofin Anglican Grammar School, Idanre, left a lasting impression.

Despite his notable achievements, El Rufai’s legacy is tainted by controversial statements and actions. The forceful handling of the Shi’ia Muslims in Kaduna, exemplified by the brutal raid on Sheikh Elzakyzaky’s residence, remains a dark chapter. The violent incident in 2015 resulted in casualties, tarnishing El Rufai’s larger-than-life image.

El Rufai’s tenure as governor brought forth both positive and contentious policies. His dedication to Kaduna’s development manifested through initiatives like the Treasury Single Account Policy, civil service reforms, and a successful School Feeding Program. On the other hand, his clashes with President Buhari’s policies and his role in the demolition of illegally constructed buildings sparked controversy.

El Rufai’s audacity to challenge authority, as witnessed in his disputes with President Buhari and his confrontation with President Yar Adua, has both garnered him admirers and antagonists. The public’s mixed perception of him stems from his admirable courage and contentious actions.

As we examine his multifaceted legacy, it’s crucial to acknowledge his accomplishments while not ignoring his flaws. El Rufai’s trajectory has been one of highs and lows, characterized by moments of triumph and instances that invite scrutiny. His transformation from a respected leader to a controversial figure is a testament to the complexity of political landscapes.

While his bigoted utterances warrant criticism, his courage to challenge norms is also praiseworthy. El Rufai must now reflect on his experiences, including the shifting support of the Kaduna people. His apparent fall from grace may be tied to the repercussions of his treatment of Southern Kaduna residents.

In conclusion, Nasir El Rufai’s legacy is a tapestry of accomplishments and controversies. His impact, both positive and negative, paints a complex picture of a man who dared to challenge conventions. As his journey takes unexpected turns, we must acknowledge the intricate nature of his contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape.
