The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has stated that the federal government cannot single-handedly finance education in Nigeria.

He made this remark during an event in Abuja, held to honor Dr. Emeka Offor and his wife, Dr. Adaora Offor, who received honorary degrees in business administration and social advocacy from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka.

Despite significant government expenditure on education, Prof. Mamman emphasized the need for private individuals and philanthropists to follow the example set by Mr. and Mrs. Offor through their foundation’s support for education.

He said, “The ministry is encouraged by such recognition because the government cannot fund education alone, despite its considerable contributions. People like Emeka Offor and his wife have stepped in, and their actions should be encouraged. This is an excellent example of well-used resources, and I urge others to emulate their efforts.”

UNN received N100 million for research activities and initiatives impacting the Faculty of Business Administration, while NAU was awarded N50 million for the welfare of widows, children with special needs, and other vulnerable groups.

Chief Offor, the celebrant and donor, mentioned that the endowment fund would be restricted, with the principal amount held in perpetuity unless otherwise decided by the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF) and the universities.

“This gesture reflects our commitment to supporting higher education in Nigeria and strengthening the bond between SEOF and UNN/NAU,” Chief Offor said.
