A powerful earthquake struck Kashmar, Iran, at 1:24 pm (0954 GMT), resulting in four fatalities and 120 injuries, according to the city’s governor, Hajatollah Shariatmadari, who provided the casualty toll on state television.

Thirty-five individuals were hospitalized, with most of the damage affecting dilapidated buildings in both urban and rural areas.

State television broadcasted footage of the quake’s aftermath, showing first responders working in streets filled with rubble.

The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake hit at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles).

Iran, located on several tectonic plates, frequently experiences earthquakes. Last year, a 5.9 magnitude quake in the mountainous northwest, near the Turkish border, killed three people and injured over 800.

One of the deadliest disasters in recent history occurred in 2003 when a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the southeastern city of Bam, killing over 31,000 people.
