Digital Illiterates Have No Business in the Media – TV Host Segun Adebowale

NEWS DIGEST – The immediate past General Manager of OvationTv and popular Tv Host, Segun Adebowale, has opined that Digital Literacy is a must have for every media professional.

He said this during a zoom conference organized by the Digital Literacy Advocacy Club in Collaboration with the Centre for Information Technology and Development.

The program themed “Digital Literacy as a tool for Post-Covid Media Development”, analysed the importance of Digital Literacy in media development.

Segun Adebowale noted that it has become increasingly important for media professionals to have the basic knowledge of Digital tools.

“It is compulsory for journalists to have Digital knowledge, you cannot survive doing media without Digital literacy, infact if you do not understand Digital tools, you should not be a journalist” he noted.

Speaking further, he said if those who are in their Sixties and seventies use Digital tools for journalism, young journalists and campus journalists must begin to prioritize knowledge in Digital Journalism.

“I am in my fifties and i prioritise use of Digital media for development, in the same vein, i have those who are in their sixties and do not joke with technology, that would give us a hint that you must be a Digital Literate” he emphasised.

Segun also said the Social media has helped to spread the extent to which news can be gotten on the go, while emphasising that although it has its own disadvantages, it has been helpful especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier, the representative of the Centre for Information Technology and Development, Maryam Ado Haruna, who is also a communication expert, said Covid-19 has shown us that Digital Literacy is important and access to the internet is not just a privilege but a basic right. She emphasised that efforts will continue to be put on developing Digital Literates.

The Digital Literacy advocacy club is an initiative of the TechMirror Magazine, aimed at spreading Knowledge on Digital literacy for societal advancement in Africa.
