As the cholera outbreak continues in Niger State, the death toll has risen to 16 individuals, with a total of 150 confirmed cases.
This increase comes after the initial reports two weeks ago, which documented 13 fatalities.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) provided an update on the situation through a visit from Dr. Gerida Birukila, Chief of the Kaduna Field Office, to the Emir of Minna. During this advocacy visit, Dr. Birukila shared that in addition to the fatalities, a total of 451 individuals have been isolated, while the confirmed positive cases were identified through rapid diagnostic testing. Fortunately, those who tested positive have been treated and subsequently discharged.
Dr. Birukila also highlighted UNICEF’s ongoing support and collaboration with state authorities to manage the outbreak and prevent its further spread. The discussion extended beyond cholera, addressing other health concerns such as polio, measles, and the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the region.
She urged the Emir for support in health initiatives, particularly the upcoming introduction of measles and rubella vaccines scheduled for October, emphasizing that both government and traditional institutions play crucial roles in eradicating these diseases.
In response, Emir Alhaji Farouq Bahago expressed his commitment to supporting UNICEF’s efforts and working in the best interest of the community. He expressed a willingness to collaborate on all four areas of health intervention mentioned during the visit. The meeting also included contributions from Health Specialist Dr. Ahmed Tsofo, who represented Dr. Birukila.
