On Monday, an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, discharged 12 out of 25 students from Ajayi Crowther University who were facing charges of conspiracy, murder, and negligence.

The students had initially been arraigned on June 5 and remanded in a correctional facility pending legal advice.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi, announced the acquittal of Kehinde Martins, Samuel Okorie, Mustapha Khalid, Yusuf Adeniran, Joseph Areoye, Iyanuoluwa Oyelakin, Obaloluwa Olalekan, Emmanuel Adejumobi, John Daudu, Moses Abiola, Hammad Tijani, and David Kolawole.

She stated that the legal advice revealed no evidence linking them to the alleged crimes.

In addition, Femi Oladoye, a security guard at the university, was granted bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties of the same amount.

Oladoye had been charged with negligence of duty.

The case, involving the remaining defendants, has been adjourned until July 8 for further mention.

According to the prosecutor, CSP Funke Fawole, the incident occurred on May 24 at around 9 p.m. at Ajayi Crowther University.

The defendants were accused of causing the death of 22-year-old student Jefry Akro by beating him with planks and electrical wires.

Oladoye was charged with failing to prevent the attack.

The offenses were cited as violations of Sections 516, 515, and 324 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
