The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has come under scrutiny due to his alleged involvement in a controversial land dispute in Abuja’s Guzape area.

An investigation has raised concerns that Egbetokun may be shielding individuals closely associated with him, who are accused of unlawfully taking possession of valuable land.

The case revolves around accusations against Bilikisu Ishaqu Aliyu, also known as Rebecca Omokamo Godwin Isaac, who allegedly orchestrated the illegal acquisition of land from a middle-class family in Guzape, Abuja.

According to reports, efforts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take control of the assets and return them to the rightful owners were allegedly obstructed by the police acting on behalf of Ms. Aliyu.

The controversy surfaced when the Yesufu family and Alhaja Colleen Yesufu filed a complaint, revealing suspicious activities related to the sale of apartments on their property in Guzape District.

They received a dubious phone call claiming that a developer had shown legal documents such as Right of Occupancy and Power of Attorney, supposedly obtained from records on the Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) website.

Further investigations by the Yesufu family uncovered unauthorized encroachment and aggressive development on their property, with unfinished units being sold to unsuspecting buyers.

The also discovered fraudulent alterations to their property records at AGIS, including forged documents in favor of Rebecca Omokamo Godwin Isaac.

It was revealed that the fraudsters had used these documents to illegitimately obtain building approvals from the Development Control Department without the consent of the rightful owners.

The Yesufu family’s investigations also highlighted Rebecca Omokamo Godwin Isaac’s alleged involvement in several other fraudulent property schemes within Guzape District, primarily targeting elderly individuals with undeveloped plots.

Despite directives from the FCT Commissioner of Police to apprehend the trespassers and secure the disputed land, the suspects were reportedly released within half an hour on orders purportedly originating from the IGP, without further investigative actions being pursued.

In addition, the EFCC initiated its own investigation, uncovering details of the syndicate’s operations and their alleged accomplices within departments of the FCT Administration.

Despite an EFCC directive to seal the properties in April 2024, Rebecca Omokamo and her husband filed a court action to prevent further inquiry by the EFCC. The court ruled against her, mandating her cooperation with the investigation, although she remained evasive.

The investigation further disclosed allegations that Omokamo had employed officers from the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force to intimidate and harass the Yesufu family and their associates.

The situation remains fluid as legal proceedings continue to unfold regarding these serious allegations.
