Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the commissioner for transportation in Lagos state, on Thursday encouraged commuters using Lagos roads to always prioritize safety.

In a statement, Mr Osiyemi also urged drivers, especially those traveling on the recently rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge, to comply with the prescribed speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour.

He said “We should recognise the pivotal role of cooperation in safeguarding lives, and as such, compliance not only ensures personal safety but also protects other road users,” he said.

Mr Osiyemi also reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforce the speed limit.

According to him, passengers need to participate actively in fostering a culture of safety by making it a duty to remind drivers to uphold the recommended speed regulations.

“Should any driver persist in flouting these essential guidelines, passengers are encouraged to promptly report such instances to the nearest Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) outpost.

“Commuters are urged to report speeding drivers to the following hotlines: 09020009000, 09020004000,” Mr Osiyemi said.

The commissioner’s appeal comes in the wake of a tragic accident on the Third Mainland Bridge on Wednesday, which resulted in two passengers being plunged into the Lagoon.
