The Plateau Government says it would be clamping down on loggers due to the environmental challenges caused by climate change.

The state Environment and Climate Change Commissioner, Peter Gwom, revealed this to newsmen in Jos on Wednesday.

He claimed that despite the Plateau’s glaring lack of trees, people continued to cut down trees.

According to the commissioner, syndicates were destroying trees on the Plateau without realising the damage they were doing to the environment.

“We have issues on the Plateau with regards to tree cutting. I want to use this medium to discourage people from cutting down trees on the Plateau. We’re trying to plant more trees. We don’t even have enough, and people are cutting down the few that we presently have.

“Very soon, a lot of enforcement will take place in that regard to make sure we end the scourge of tree cutting going around the state. Look at the wildlife park; what is happening today? We’re working with them very closely to make sure that we replant and stop people from cutting down trees over there,” Mr Gwom said.
