An outbreak of chickenpox has been reported in Wubara community, situated in Jiwa ward of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, the chairman of the council, confirmed the outbreak during a medical outreach to the affected community.

Represented by the Supervisory Council for Health, Faoye Tunji, the chairman expressed concern over the recent outbreak, which has affected numerous households and resulted in loss of lives. He described the situation as unfortunate and called for urgent measures to prevent further occurrences.

Maikalangu urged residents to adopt healthy lifestyles, including sleeping in well-ventilated houses and seeking medical attention promptly for any symptoms. He emphasised the importance of addressing climate change-related challenges, such as extreme heat and adverse weather conditions.

Dr Dorothy Ihegazie, the Programme Officer for Disease Control at the Health Unit/Department of AMAC, reassured the community of the council’s readiness to provide medical assistance.

She highlighted the availability of drugs at local pharmacies and urged residents to cooperate with healthcare professionals.

Alhaji Ibrahim Dallatu, the Chief of Wubara, welcomed the medical outreach, expressing confidence that it would help prevent the spread of diseases within the community.

According to City & Crime reports, over 1,000 community members received medical examinations and treatments during the outreach. In addition to addressing chickenpox, the medical team administered medications for malaria, typhoid, and provided immunizations and vaccinations against various diseases, including COVID-19, poliomyelitis, and monkeypox.
