Chelsea to face possible rival in Kai Havertz pursuit

NEWS DIGEST – Chelsea faces the prospect of being beaten to Kai Havertz by Bayern Munich – if the Bundesliga club sells Thiago Alcantara amid talk of a move to Liverpool.

Bayer Leverkusen attacker Havertz is one of the hottest properties on the market ahead of the summer transfer window amid a €100million (£90m) valuation.

Chelsea is looking to make the 21-year-old their third summer signing after capturing Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

But Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City are monitoring developments, while Real Madrid is also keen.

Bayern holds a long-term interest in Havertz, who is the youngest player in the league’s history to reach 50 and 100 appearances.

But the Bundesliga champions’ ability to launch a move has always been dependent on their financial position.

They have an avenue to raise the necessary funds if they sell Thiago, who has rejected a contract extension ahead of the final year of his deal, however.

According to Kicker, Bayern bigwigs are reluctant to allow the Spanish midfielder to leave on the cheap and will hold out for a fee between €60m (£54m) and €80m (£72m).

It is claimed achieving a sale within their desired price range would allow them to finance a swoop for Havertz.
