A commercial bus driver, known as Lukman, tragically collapsed and succumbed to death while driving students from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) to the campus.

Accounts of the incident reveal that on Friday, Lukman was reportedly observed “gasping for air” while still at the helm of the bus. Shock and panic ensued among the passengers as the situation unfolded within a mere 30 minutes.

A witness, recounting the harrowing ordeal via a widely circulated WhatsApp message, detailed how he had to assume control of the vehicle from Lukman’s grasp and swiftly apply the brakes. The swift action aimed to avert further danger as the stricken driver was urgently rushed to the school clinic.

Despite efforts to save him, Lukman was pronounced dead upon arrival at the clinic, marking a distressing conclusion to the unforeseen tragedy. The university community mourns the loss of the dedicated driver who met his untimely demise while in the line of duty.
“Our bus driver just died on the road while driving us from the Sanrab Petrol Station area, Tanke, Ilorin to the university campus. I was sitting in the front but wasn’t looking up because I was reading the Qur’an on my phone,” he said.

“The other person beside me just called my attention shouting Baba multiple times. By the time I looked up, he was already gasping, and the bus was drifting away from the road.

“I had to press the brake, take control, and bring it to a halt. He was pronounced dead at the school clinic. Everything happened within 30 minutes.”

Kunle Akogun, the director of information of the varsity, also described the incident as “unfortunate”.
