President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tanimu Yakubu as the new director-general of the Budget Office of the Federation.

This appointment comes after the tenure of the previous DG, Ben Akabueze, ended. The announcement was made by Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson.

Yakubu, an accomplished economist, previously served as the chief economic adviser to former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua from 2007 to 2010.

He also held the positions of managing director and CEO of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2003 to 2007, and commissioner of finance, budget, and economic planning in Katsina State from 1999 to 2003.

Akabueze was initially appointed by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari in June 2016 and had his tenure extended for a second term on May 17, 2020.

According to the statement, Yakubu was also the managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2003 to 2007, and commissioner of finance, budget, and economic planning in Katsina state from 1999 to 2003.

“President Tinubu thanks the outgoing Director-General, Mr. Akabueze, for his services and wishes him success in his future endeavours.”

The statement noted that the president anticipates the new director-general of “this pivotal agency” to improve the delivery of effective and high-quality budget functions, aiming to promote fiscal sustainability, transparency, and accountability in managing public finances for national development.
