Tinubu Administration Suspends N-Power Programme, Cites Flaws and Irregularities

The Tinubu administration has discontinued the N-power programme, a social intervention scheme initiated by the former administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, announced the suspension during an interview with TVC News on Saturday.

The Minister explained that the several flaws in the scheme, which aimed to combat youth unemployment and promote social development, led to the suspension of the programme.

“We must go back to look into N-Power and understand what the problems are so we will basically suspend the programme for now until we are done with proper investigation into the utilization of funds into the N-Power programme,” Edu said.

She added that the government wants to know how many persons are currently on the programme, how many persons are owed, and how much they are owed.

According to Edu, the N-Power programme can be an even better programme and the government is keen on and expanding the programme.

Noting the irregularities in the programme, Edu pointed out that the ministry discovered a sizable number of beneficiaries who should have exited the programme last year but still claiming the reward.

“Sometimes we contact the school or the places where they are working and they are not there. They are not working yet they keep claiming that they are being owed eight or nine months stipends,” she said.

She added that about 80 per cent of the beneficiaries are not working, yet they are claiming salaries.
