After spending 27 months in detention, former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, has been granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja. The court’s decision allows Kyari to attend to the burial rites of his mother, Yachilla Kyari. The bail, granted for a period of two weeks, comes amid Kyari’s trial on drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), following his arrest over two years ago on February 14, 2022.

Kyari, who is the eldest son among ten children, was unable to attend his mother’s burial. However, the event was marked by a significant turnout of residents in Borno State, where Yachilla was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic traditions on the same day she passed away, Sunday, May 5, 2024.

This development follows the suspension of Kyari and two senior police officers, Sunday Ubua and James Bawa, by the Police Service Commission in 2022, in connection with a cocaine deal involving a suspended deputy commissioner of police. The Police Service Commission’s action was confirmed in a statement issued at the time.

Furthermore, Kyari has been declared wanted by the NDLEA over alleged ties to an international drug cartel. The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babalola, alleged that Kyari and his Intelligence Response Team apprehended drug traffickers arriving from Ethiopia with 25kg of cocaine, of which they purportedly retained 15kg for themselves.
