In a move to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal, the federal government has sanctioned a minimum wage of N35,000 for federal civil servants.

The decision was communicated by a memo from the Presidency, endorsed by Ekpo Nta, the Chairman and CEO of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

The circular, dated 19 October 2023, announced that the approved wage increase to N35,000 for all federal civil servants would commence in September this year.

According to the circular, the new wage award will remain effective until a new national minimum wage is signed into law.

It further stated that the implementation of the new minimum wage will be funded by the treasury for all treasury-funded federal government ministries, departments and agencies.

In addition, non-treasury-funded agencies are expected to implement this from their internally generated revenue (IGR) or statutory allocations.
