In a dramatic development, officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), together with the Dragon Squad and personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, have seized control of the Cross River State Assembly complex. The takeover follows the impeachment of Assembly speaker, Elvert Anyambem, over allegations of gross misconduct and financial misappropriation.

This long-awaited move, brewing for months, finally materialized as over 20 members of the Assembly lent their support to his impeachment. Spearheaded by Effiong Ekarika, representing Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang during Tuesday’s session, the motion for Anyambem’s removal saw swift action.
In the aftermath of the impeachment, the symbol of the Assembly’s authority, the mace, was promptly removed by the members.
