In the aftermath of Monday’s boat accident in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, local divers and officials from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency have recovered three more bodies, bringing the total to eight – three men and five women.

The tragic incident involved a boat carrying over 200 bags of assorted grains, animals, sugar cane, and passengers, including about 100 traders heading from Dugga Mashaya to Wara market in Kebbi State.

Reports indicate that the boat capsized around 2 pm on Monday, with five bodies initially recovered, while several individuals remain missing. The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts, with an additional team dispatched from the agency’s headquarters to aid in the operation.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, expressed deep concern over the recurring boat accidents in the state, urging relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to enforce safety measures in water transportation. The governor emphasized the need for collective action to address the rising incidents and extended condolences to the Emirate and residents of Borgu LGA. He called the incident unfortunate and urged prayers for the departed souls, quick recovery for the injured, and comfort for the affected families.

Governor Bago commended the swift response of Borgu LGA officials and the Niger State Emergency Management Agency in collaboration with local divers for their efforts in the rescue operations. The state is grappling with the tragic consequences of water accidents, prompting a call for concerted efforts to prevent further loss of lives and properties.
