The Benue State Government says it is set to establish its own power plant in order to boost socio-economic development in the state.

The Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC) came up with the concept after the federal government recently approved a bill allowing state governments to control and own their own electricity providers.

At a meeting with a Remedy Earth delegation at the BIPC corporate headquarters in Makurdi, Raymond Asemakaha, the Managing Director of BIPC, requested that the electricity company establish a pilot plant in the state.

Asemakaha emphasized the necessity of the state owning a power plant in order to transform the state and promote economic activity.

“For us, we know that one of the things that stimulate the economy is when you have enough power. So, we are looking for options to ensure that the state generates its power and share to its communities.

“We want them to do the plant here and test run it so we can know what they are capable of before we will engage them. Gone are the days that people tell stories. We want to see it before we can recommend them to the governor,” he said.

Prior to this, the Remedy Earth delegation, which was headed by Peace Obichere, the company’s regional head for Africa, gave assurances that the company was prepared to carry out the BIPC pilot plant in nine months.

Obichere continued, saying that the business would mobilize the necessary resources to see the plant built and that it possessed the labour force and technological know-how to complete the project.
