The Federal Government has begun the payment of withheld salaries of lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU).

The NATIONONLINE reports the Director Press in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), Mr. Bawa Mokwa, confirmed the development yesterday in Abuja.

Mokwa mentioned that the government paid two months’ salary arrears to the lecturers over the weekend, and they were planning to release another two months’ salary to them yesterday.

The director said the government had decided to pay off the eight months’ salary arrears of the university lecturers who went on an eight-month strike during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.

Recall that in October 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved the release of four of the eight months ASUU withheld workers’ salaries.

The salaries were withheld when the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari invoked a ‘No work, no pay policy’ against some university-based unions that embarked on a strike that lasted eight months in 2022.
