How Barbing Became My Lifeline During ASUU Strike, FUDMA Professor Reveals

NEWS DIGEST – Prof. Bashir Aliyu Sallau, a senior lecturer at the Department of Hausa at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, has made a surprising revelation – he also doubles as a local barber, commonly known as ‘Wanzan’ in the Hausa community.

Interestingly, this barbering venture serves as his ‘side hustle.’ In an interview conducted by a foreign broadcasting station and monitored by LEADERSHIP, Prof. Sallau expressed pride in his additional occupation, particularly highlighting how it came to his aid during the prolonged ASUU strike in 2022. The strike, initiated as a result of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy introduced by the Federal Government, left university lecturers without pay for an extended period.

Prof. Sallau disclosed that his ‘side hustle’ played a vital role in sustaining him during this difficult time. He resorted to his barbering skills to make ends meet amidst the financial challenges brought about by the strike.

When queried about potential conflicts of interest with his university responsibilities, Prof. Sallau explained that he strategically manages his time. He engages in his barbering venture exclusively during his free periods, ensuring that it does not interfere with his academic commitments.
