Suspected bandits seized two trucks filled with smuggled goods in a dense forest in the North on Friday. The seizure took place as the smugglers endeavoured to transport the contraband into the country via concealed routes near the Batsari area of Katsina State.

Comptroller Dalha Chedi of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Kaduna, revealed in a press briefing that the smugglers had settled on the forested terrain as their route to evade detection. He noted that this decision ultimately resulted in the interception of their goods by armed bandits.

Chedi further explained that the porous nature of the country’s borders poses a significant challenge for customs enforcement, particularly in areas where banditry is prevalent.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, customs officials have resolved to collaborate closely with other security agencies to fortify the surveillance and seal off illicit entry points along the borders of Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states, among others. This joint effort aims to stem the tide of illegal smuggling activities and enhance national security.
