NEWS DIGEST- Dr. Jibrin Bara, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi, announced the successful completion of the hospital’s inaugural laser surgery to remove kidney stones. This groundbreaking procedure replaces traditional instruments with endoscopic and laser technology.

Dr. Bara announced in Bauchi, highlighting that ATBUTH is the first healthcare facility in the Northeast region to offer laser treatment for kidney stones. He emphasized the hospital’s new full upper tract endoscopic and laser facility, making advanced kidney stone treatment accessible locally and reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad. Additionally, residents can benefit from subsidies to offset the high costs associated with treatment outside the region and in Nigeria.

He believes that this achievement will enhance affordable healthcare access and expedite patient recovery. Urologist Dr. Evaristus Azobah, noting the pain and discomfort caused by kidney stones, emphasized the importance of removing them to ensure uninterrupted daily life. Laser Lithotripsy treatment, he explained, spares patients the pain of invasive surgical procedures by using ultrasound shock waves to break kidney stones into smaller, passable particles.

The hospital’s management received praise from Dr. Azobah for introducing laser surgery treatment, which is expected to reduce costs for patients. Dr. Makama Baje, Head of the Department of Surgery at ATBUTH, also commended Dr. Azobah for the successful operation and for mentoring other hospital staff.
