The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare in Anambra State, Ify Obinabo, has taken swift action in the case of Nwaedoka Chidima, a woman from Ebonyi State who threw her newborn baby into a pit toilet in Otuocha community, Anambra East Local Government Area. Chidima was apprehended while she was working on a farming job.

The incident occurred on Sunday, and the baby was rescued on Tuesday after residents heard its cries from the pit toilet. Esther, a resident, explained that Chidima, who was pregnant at the time, had secured a farm job in the community. While working on the farm, Chidima went to use the toilet and returned with bloodstains.

Esther, who had allowed Chidima to stay at her residence, said, “Chidimma is my friend, she begged me to stay at my place for a few days because of a farming job she got. She was working on the farm when she suddenly started acting funny after she complained of stomach upset and went to the pit toilet to ease herself.”

Thinking that Chidima had a stillbirth, Esther suggested she go back to her parents and inform them of the situation. However, on Tuesday, they heard a baby’s cry coming from the pit toilet. They used a ladder to rescue the newborn and immediately contacted security agencies and the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.

Commissioner Obinabo revealed that the baby is currently stable and receiving treatment at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Amaku Awka. She also confirmed the arrest of Chidima and expressed concern over the increasing rate of young girls committing crimes. She assured that the young mother will face appropriate consequences, as the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has a zero-tolerance policy for such acts.
