FG committed to alleviating suffering of Nigerians – Minister

NEWS DIGEST – The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment towards alleviating Nigerians sufferings occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the world.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, stated this in Awka, Anambra state during the donation of some relief materials to the State government as part of measures to cushion the economic effects of the scourge.

Presenting the 50kg bags of rice numbering 1,800 and 2,400 cartons of tomatoes the minister who was represented by the Deputy Director, Humanitarian Affairs Department in the ministry, Mr Charles Anaelo said the items were targeted at the indigent, vulnerable and low income earners in the state.

“We have handed over 1,800 bags of rice and cartons of tomato paste. We have gotten the buying of the state government that the palliatives will go to the poorest of the poor.

“The remaining 600 cartons of vegetable oil will be delivered to the state soonest,” she said.

Governor Willie Obiano, represented by his deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke, expressed gratitude to President Buhari for the gesture targeted at tackling the pandemic in the country.

He said: “I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for all the interventions he has been giving to the states in support of their efforts in fighting this coronavirus. I think this is a situation where the nation needs to come together and fight this virus.

“We are not just fighting the virus; we are also fighting the hunger and poverty it has created. People are in dire need of relief materials of food items to be able to support themselves and their families.

“So, we are happy that you are in Anambra and these relief materials are coming handy. We’ll make sure we distribute them to the people that, really, are in need of them.”
