Businessman, cashier arraigned for allegedly defrauding bet naija operators of N600,000

NEWS DIGEST -Two men, Adetoro Solomon and Williams Peter, were on Wednesday arraigned in Lagos for allegedly duping a betting company, Consul Games Ltd, of N600,000.

The accused — Solomon, 24, and Peter, 38 — a businessman and a cashier respectively, who reside in Ikeja area of Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, the accused committed the offences on May 25 at 9.45 p.m. at Consul Games Ltd located at No. 38, Olowu St., Ikeja.

He said the men collected tickets worth N600,000 at Consul Games for betnaija betting with a promise to pay back the money after sales.

“The accused obtained tickets which they used in gambling and failed to pay back as promised and absconded.”

The offences contravened Sections 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 stipulates 15 years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretences.

The accused, however, denied the charges.

In her short ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case until July 10.
