Abuja Court Threatens DSS DG With Jail Time for Ignoring Rulings on Kanu’s Visit

The Abuja Federal High Court has issued a stern warning to the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, threatening the possibility of being jailed for contempt of court.

The court’s notice came in response to the DSS’s repeated disregard for its rulings regarding visitation rights for Kanu while in the custody of the secret police.

In the notice, the court cautioned the DSS DG to adhere to its orders or risk facing legal repercussions, including the possibility of being jailed for contempt of court.

The order reads: “TAKE NOTICE that unless you obey the directions contained in this Order, you will be guilty of Contempt of Court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”

Recall that on May 20, 2024, while refusing Kanu’s application to restore his bail in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court, the Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, entered an order modifying the conditions of counsel visitation to Kanu.

This modified order was, according to the court, aimed at expanding the opportunity for Kanu’s lawyers to adequately prepare him for trial in a way that would ensure he gets a fair trial.

Justice Nyako ordered that Kanu be permitted by the State Security Services to meet with up to five of his lawyers, and that such consultation be done in a “clean” room at the State Security Services where Kanu is currently detained.
