NEWS DIGEST: In a move towards promoting harmony between different religions, the Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Mosque in Al Mushrif, Abu Dhabi, has been renamed to “Mariam, Umm Eisa” which means “Mary, Mother of Jesus” in Arabic.

Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan initiated the renaming to “consolidate bonds of humanity between followers of different religions,” according to Gulf News.

The renaming was hailed by religious leaders of various denominations, with senior chaplain at St. Andrew’s Church, Andrew Thompson, saying that Mary is a “holy, special figure” who symbolizes obedience to God in both the Christian and Islamic faiths.

This gesture of interfaith unity follows a recent incident where a church in Al Ain opened its doors to over 200 Muslim workers for Maghrib prayers.
