University launches research lab for Cervical Cancer

NEWS DIGEST – Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, has launched a Human Papilloma Virus DNA Modular Research Laboratory for screening cervical cancer in women.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Atiku-Kurawa, who commissioned the laboratory on Wednesday, said the laboratory was established mainly for research due to increasing cases of cervical cancer among women.

He added that center was established with a grant from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and state-of-the-art facilities were provided to ensure better service delivery.

According to him, the laboratory, which is the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria, will assist in the research and treatment of women with cervical cancer, especially those from Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, and other states of the federation.

He urged researchers to take advantage of the centre by conducting scientific research to achieve the set objectives.

The VC pledged continuous support for the centre, saying that “researches are now conducted not only for academic progression but also for economic development”.
