Chelsea defeat Man United to win the FA Cup
NEWS DIGEST – Antonio Conte’s men produced a spirited display as they held their nerve to defend an early lead to claim the vaunted trophy for the 8th time in the club’s history.
After an uneventful opening 20 minutes, Chelsea’s breakthrough came in the 21st minute after Hazard was felled in the box leaving Michal Oliver with no option than to point to the spot. The Belgian talisman dispatched home the resulting penalty, sending De Gea the wrong way to throw the Blues crowd into raptures.
The Red Devils resumed the second half on the front foot with Sanchez finding the back of the net in the 63rd minute. The Chilean’s celebration was cut short as the goal was disallowed.
Martial and Lukaku were brought in to replace Lingard and Rashford in the 73rd minute to improve the ammunition in the final third but the Blues resisted everything thrown at them as they showed the defensive steel they are made of.
The result gives Chelsea some succour after a disappointing campaign and buys Conte some more time having been strongly linked with a summer exit.
