Protest Rocks UNIBEN Over ASUU Strike
NEWS DIGEST – Students across Edo State on Wednesday gathered at the University of Benin to protest on the ongoing industrial strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The students who protested were a combination of students from some tertiary institutions in Edo State, which include the University of Benin, Ambrose Alli University, Auchi Polytechnic amongst others, carrying placards with various inscriptions.
During the protest, the coalition blocked the Oba Ovonramwen square popularly called Ring Road to express their grievances which resulted in traffic jams around the axis, including Akpakpava, Mission Road, Sokponba Road and Sapele Road.
The protesting students vowed to make the protest a daily affair until the government intervened and students return back to school, expressing their grievances over prolonged years of study due to the incessant strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
Prior to the protest at UNIBEN, some students already planned to stage a protest at the University of Ibadan and University of Lagos on Tuesday 3rd of May, 2022. While the protest at the University of Ibadan was held, the one for the University of Lagos did not hold as a result of the presence of the armed security officials at the gate of the school.
The ASUU strike action which is entering its 80 days has led to the closure of public universities since its inception following the union’s demands, which the Federal Government had, allegedly, not met.
