“A people united cannot be defeated”: ASUU chairman finally speaks on court order

NEWS DIGEST – The National President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke has written to members of the union to remain unfazed by the ruling of the National Industrial Court on Wednesday asking the union to immediately call off its strike.

“A people united cannot be defeated,” he said.

Osodeke wrote the zonal coordinators to reiterate to members the union’s commitment to continue with the strike until their demands are met.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to demand that the Federal Government commit to past agreements with the union, review the salaries of striking lecturers and voice its disapproval of the IPPIS.

“Kindly inform our members that our lawyer is filing an appeal and stay of execution on the judgment,” he added. “They should remain calm and strong and strong.”

Less than 24 hours before the ruling today, ASUU had been involved in a 5-hour meeting with Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila who sought to discuss how to bring the 7-month-old strike to an end.

“There are principally seven areas ASUU has put forward as conditions for them to go back to class, and we have looked at those areas and agreed on certain things,” said Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

The Speaker added that only the President can ratify the agreement but not until after he’s back from his United Nations commitments when he will be available to review them.
