The athletes’ village for the Paris Olympics and Paralympics has officially opened, welcoming its first residents on Thursday.

Located north of Paris, the village is set to accommodate nearly 14,500 individuals, including 9,000 athletes at its peak.

Eight days ahead of the opening ceremony, the initial arrivals included teams from Australia and Brazil. “We are ready,” remarked Augustin Tran Van Chau, the village’s deputy head, in comments to French media.

Organizers have highlighted the village’s design, which boasts natural cooling without the need for air-conditioning.

Indoor temperatures are projected to be at least 6 degrees Celsius (42 Fahrenheit) lower than outdoor temperatures during summer.

Despite this, some delegations have opted to bring their own air-conditioning units.

The village features numerous innovations aimed at showcasing low-carbon construction practices.

Following its use by Olympians and Paralympians from July 26 to September 8, the apartments will be repurposed into residences, with at least a third earmarked for public housing.
