Kwande: Bow out a Lawmaker; Rise as a Legend, By Usama Jaafar
NEWS DIGEST – For the first time in many years, my fingers are sticky, typing yet trembling, as though not to. Musing about the necessity, I have to, as a matter of utmost importance. Yeah! This is going to be my last opportunity to pen something for him as a legislator and a humble personality who has attained a legendary status.
The journey began years ago, when I wrote an open letter to him on some of his policies, he invited me to his office after reading it (who does that!? Only those with the common people at heart) . After deliberating on clearer policies, he funded and saw to the execution of programs aimed at benefiting his constituents. Not only did he do that, he went ahead and offered me a job.
Working with him has its own challenges, but on the same vein, exposed me to so many things. The experience I have garnered from the savoured political atmosphere, the knowledge accrued on the challenges bedeviling our people and nation at large. As such, it will be out of place and unwise of me not to celebrate and hypnotise the exemplary leadership qualities of this great leader which he will always be remembered for.
Again, I was motivated to write this piece for some reasons which include how his constituents and people around him emotionally praised his exemplary leadership qualities and mention good things about him. Though I am a living witness to some these qualities based on the little time I spend together with him, but I will like to pin point some.
In life one, comes across different kind of people. Some grow and rise, others dwindle in fortunes and fame. Hon (Dr) Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, the out -going member representing Bassa/Jos North federal constituency belongs to the former category. He is a man with strong conviction and unique character. He displays no aura of arrogance and desperation for public office. Certainly, the exhibition of such simple way of life. has earned him not only more popularity but also respect and dignity amidst his people.
He proved this on so many occasion, recent was when he wrote a short statement on his facebook account a day after he lost the APC primaries to return to the green chamber for the third term. He equally when out of his way to campaign for the re-election of all APC flag-bearers. Rarely you see a politician loose and still campaigns.
“I have done my part selflessly and passionately, I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly, there where joyous and the sad moments, it was a privilege at the same time not easy serving the Good people of Bassa/Jos North. I pray that those I wronged will forgive me, as I hold no one in mind, I pray those I have touch in one way or the other will, in turn, pray for a better future for me”
The point from the above was to demostrate the personality of Kwande. He believes God gives leadership and takes it from whosoever he wishes at his appointed time.
As a politician and representative of the people, he gave out his very best in attracting developmental project to his constituents. He was indeed a successful lawmaker going by the evidence of physical infrastructures he executed across his constituency: schools, hospitals, empowerment and scholarships amongst others in addition to bills and motion sponsored by him. He equally ensure that he completed all project he has started before his tenure expires.
His commitment and love for his people is second to none. He hardly spend More than two weeks outside the state without coming back to his constituency. Even if he is outside the country, his heart and mine are always here as he constantly call. Alot of people testified to that. He is religious too. Whenever he is around, we always pray together. Infact, he sometimes alert us and call our attention when it is time.
His hand is always open in kind and in cash. There might be others like him, but among his piers, he has no rival. He is addicted to giving that he sometimes borrowed to meet his people’s need.
Whenever he is quiet and moody it means he has no money. But once he has, he will try to give every person attention, listen and try to solve anybody’s problem with a smile.
He is most often reffered to as Hon. No problem. He seldom says no to his people’s request. His ‘no problem’ sometimes means there is no money but, it will be attended to, on its arrival. Otherwise, he would reach to his pocket or say meet Maigoro.
He was a very generous man and always willing to help. He was also very wise and you could go to him with any problem. He taught me a lot about hard work, love for people and family, appreciation for the outdoors and respect for others. He has no quest for worldly things.
Going by his personality traits, kwande is humility personified. He honors not only the rich and the poor but least people in the society. Sometimes I couldn’t stop thinking on why a man who grow up in an influential home yet remain humble with power, fame and money.
Going by his personality traits, kwande is humility personified. He honors not only the rich and the poor but least people in the society. With all his power and wealth, we eat from the same table and seat around to chat with him. Beyond that, he is a man with great sympathy for others. He drives joy in putting smiles on the faces of other people. He is straight forward too. When he talks to you, he goes straight to the point, he does not like embellishments.
Sometimes, his foes would seek for his assistance and he would gladly assist, more often, he would even go ahead to extend a hand of friendship to them. I always wonder, to a point where I ask why. He would smile and say, “I do it to please my God”. What a man!
His mobile phones are constantly ringing with numerous calls, text messages coming in. He makes effort to respond to people by himself despite his busy schedule. He is also not a tribal bigot, you will always see all sort of people around him.
He posits maturely, he does excellence. He likes good finishing no-matter the small environment. A visionary leader, man of many ideas.
The goods I have achieved, that which others have achieved through me and also, that which Kwande does without my knowledge, are numerous and immeasurable. Words alone can’t describe them, pages upon pages of book and books can only contain a few. History will not remember him only as a lawmaker, but one who positively impacted by touching lives of many. His praises will be sung for ages in the hearts of men, children and women alike.
I can never but recall the encouraging and morale booster always giving by my him to many most especially the youths on the need for them to be self reliance. And sometimes he assist them with some token to start up a business.
I will one day, tell my children how privileged, fortunate and proud I was to be part of the team that forged a new beginning, one which will forever be remembered for its achievements.
Conclusively, I most sincerely thanked the good people of Bassa/Jos North for giving our Boss the mandate to represent them and also appreciate the effort of his aides and those close to him whom we work together as a team. May Allah crowned our effort with much better and bigger appointment. Amin.
