OPINION: Happy Birthday, Sule Lamido, By Mansur Ahmed
NEWS DIGEST – On August 30th, the world will be celebrating the 70th birthday of one of the most experienced, goal getter, visionary, and sagacious politicians on the face of Nigeria, whose simplicity and humanity stand him out. Sule Lamido is a man I will say has seen both the good and bad sides of politics in Nigeria.
He is a man with unassailable confidence and spirit, he doggedly faced the disappointment and political odds that’s stared him in the face before he crossed the bridge to monumental success . Sule Lamido is a revered gentleman, straight forward, no nonsense, and above all, deeply religious. Despite attaining many positions of power and influence, Sule Is still the same Sule …… Very humble, proud of his rural background and close to the common men whom he accords much respect.
Born in Bamaina, Birnin kudu in present Jigawa state on August 30th, 1948, He started his political career in the second republic as PRP National youth leader, an elected lawmaker in the platform of People’s redemption party led by nationalist Malam Aminu Kano, the trendiest and popular politician the continent of Africa has ever seen. When second republic experiment was aborted by some military obstructions in 1983, Lamido went back to private business where he successfully ran some business concerns which created lots of jobs for the country’s unemployed populations
He served as National Secretary of Social Democratic Party SDP, which was one of the most popular political parties in the country, the party that won June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, whose standard bearer was MKO Abiola.
In his unyielding political struggle Lamido was imprisoned by late General Sani Abacha in 1998, this is not his first time in facing political persecution for his unquenchable believe in democratic Nigeria. He is one of the strong pillars in forming PDP, because of the role he played in the emergence of Obasanjo he was nominated as foreign minister.
As Foreign affairs minister Lamido formulated and implemented many far-reaching policies that shaped Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with other countries,
When Lamido was Governor of Jigawa state with the little federal allocation to the state there is no sector or segment of the society that was not positively affected by his administration, so also there is no part of the state, no matter how remote, that was not reached in terms of public service delivery and infrastructural development. The outputs, outcome and impact of our interventions and initiatives are indeed very evident in all sectors and in all the nooks and crannies of the state. No stone was left unturned in the socio-economic transformation process we spearheaded.
Sule Lamido is Selfless leader with clear determination who always amid the “I love my country, Nigeria. I can never allow my personal aspiration to blind me to do anything that can bring danger to my country. A country that made me what I am, gave me space to grow? I will do everything in my power to pay back Nigeria for what Nigeria has made me. I will work hard to see that Nigeria is stable, United and strong, so that as Nigeria has enabled me to grow Nigerians will also have the opportunity to grow to the best of their potentials, to be governors, ministers, parliamentarians, academicians, captains of industry, scientists, professionals and what have you “
Sule Lamido, Is a man of ideology when he was sworn in as Governor of Jigawa state he said and I quote ” Our ideological background is firmly anchored on the antecedent of democratic humanism as defined and epitomized by its chief exponent, Malam Aminu Kano.
Lamido is a kind of leader who doesn’t consider people’s perception on him that’s why he always made this point “I wish you can feel the kind of biting going-on within me, I am seriously agonizing, I have a crises going in me. As a person who has been foreign minister, Lamido has seen the best of the world, worst of the world…. When Sule became Governor Jigawa is under ruin, ruins in all classifications. Sule first want to bring it out of the depth of the ruin to the level being on the surface ready for re-construction, reconstruction and made it a reference point in all ramifications.
With this wonderful background and some of his achievements, I called on PDP delegates and Nigerians to vote for Lamido to get the ticket as well as winning the February general election, I assured that he will do more for Nigeria, Happy birthday to a man whose life does not lend itself to embellishment because it is an inspirational study of triumph of mind over matters. I want use this medium to say Happy birthday to Nigeria’s President awaiting. (INSHA ALLAH.)
