OAU Approves 2-Week Mid-Semester Break For Students

NEWS DIGEST – The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has approved a two-week mid-semester break for the students of the institution.

The announcement of the break was contained in an official circular signed by the Registrar of the University, M.I Omosule (Mrs) on Saturday 26th of March, 2022. According to the circular, the two week-break takes effect from Monday, March 28th, 2022.

The break is coming following the declaration of a two-week warning strike declared by the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and associated institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) amidst the ongoing two-week warning strike embarked on by the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the extension of the rollover strike embarked on by the national body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The University is also going through an internal crisis of two factions of the academic staff; Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Congress of University Academics (CONUA), in which the ASUU faction has been on strike since January 31st, 2022 but the CONUA faction has continued to go to classes.

It should also be noted of the latest controversies surrounding the appointment of Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire by the OAU Governing Council led by the its Chairman and University’s Pro-Chancellor, Owelle Oscar Udoji, as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University with series of protests from the indigenes of the host community of the University, Ile-Ife, clamoring for an Ife indigene as the new Vice Chancellor, which led to paralyzation of activities in the university for over 3days.

However, the management didn’t give any reason for the break.
