The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has reported that the country experienced 22 building collapses between January and July 2024.

COREN President, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, shared this information at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday. The event was themed “The Incessant Spate of Building Collapse in Nigeria in Recent Times: A Call for Sustainable Collaboration by All Stakeholders.”

Abubakar revealed that from January to July 14, 22 building collapse incidents were recorded across Nigeria. Lagos accounted for 27.27% of these cases, while Abuja and Anambra each had 18.18%.

Ekiti and Plateau each reported 9.09%, and Kano, Taraba, and Niger each reported 4.55%.

“Records indicate that Lagos leads in the frequency of building collapses. Over 91 buildings have collapsed in Lagos since 2012, resulting in the deaths of over 354 individuals. In Abuja, approximately 30 buildings have collapsed since 1993, causing more than 64 deaths and numerous injuries,” Abubakar said.

He also highlighted recent incidents, including a collapse near DMGS Onitsha in Anambra State on June 12, and the collapse of Saint Academy in Plateau on July 13, which resulted in 22 student deaths and 134 injuries. Another collapse occurred in Kubwa, Abuja.

Abubakar emphasized that these incidents are alarming and necessitate serious reflection and collaboration among all stakeholders to address the issue.
