Ambode opens new lay-by to ease Ikeja traffic
NEWS DIGEST–The Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, on Monday opened a newly constructed lay-by on Allen Junction meant to decongest traffic on Obafemi Awolowo Road in the Ikeja area.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, ‘Ladi Lawanson, said the project was meant to respond to the gridlock in the area, especially during the peak period.
He said, “This will impact directly on travel time, as well as reduction of traffic congestion, by diverting the picking and dropping of passengers away from the main road.”
Ambode said his administration would continue to explore ways to ease movement on Lagos roads, adding that Lagosians must work together as a team “as we continue to obey traffic rules and regulations to encourage investors from far and near.
“As you take ownership of this project and many others and prevent them from vandalism while paying your tax, you will encourage government to do more at all time,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Dr Taiwo Salaam, said the layby was an “iconic project that represented the emerging picture of the new Lagos.”
He called on residents to see the project as “our very own project and make the best use of it. It is neither a lavatory nor a bedroom, it is a project that belongs to all Lagosians.”
