UPDATED: Police station razed to Ashes as Osun community protest killing of undergraduate
NEWS DIGEST – The aggrieved residents of Iwo town in Osun state have burnt down the town’s police station following the killing of a young man by the Nigerian Police Force’s Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)
THE NEWS DIGEST gathered that the deceased, Tunde Nafiu, was shot while he was trying to board a commercial motorcycle to Ile-Ogbo area of the town at about 9:30pm on Thursday.
An eyewitness account has it that Mr. Nafiu was met with a stray bullet when the police officers were shooting sporadically in to the air.
“At about 9:30pm yesterday, there was a carnival along Ile-Ogbo area of Iwo.”
“At that time, the SARS guys were trying to parade and they were obstructed as a result of the on-going carnival. Afterwards, the officers were able to pass but they saw people gyrating. That prompted the shooting from the security operatives.” The man, who begged to be anonymous, said.
Another resident, Iyanu Ajao, told News Digest that the death of the young man has led Comrades and youths in the town to mobilize for a protest against unlawful killing, which resulted to the burning down of the police station.
However, the spokesperson for the Osun state police command, Folashade Odoro, refused to comment on the issue as she claimed that she was in the middle of a program when News Digest contacted.
Also, the respondent to the Osun police control number stated that she can’t release any details to our reporter except Mrs. Odoro speaks.
According to Alim Abiola, who also witnessed the protest, the incident is not the first as the police officers are reportedly fond of threatening residents by shooting.
“This is not the first time. We need to show them that they can’t just behave anyhow. All these have to stop.” He said.
The Press Secretary to the monarch of Iwo land, Ibrahim Ali also confirmed the incident but could not give our reporter a detailed report on the killing.
“We are discussing the issue with the king now. I’ll get back to you later.” He promised.
It could be recalled that The Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for the Overhauling of the SARS in the police structure.
