Like Yar’Adua, Like Kwankwaso, By Affinnih Ibrahim

NEWS DIGEST – On the 5th of May 2022, Nigeria both at home and in Diaspora once again paid tribute to the memory of one of the greatest presidents our country has ever had, late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua. May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace.

As an average Nigerian youth, after a reality check of the state of our country at the moment, one cannot help but be saddened over the void left in leadership and hopes for this country’s greatness by the sudden death of the late president.

Not much needs to be stated nor does anyone need to be convinced to prove his outstanding leadership of late Umaru Musa Yar’adua over this nation. It will soothe our memory to recollect the state of our nation under the selfless service.

Under late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, below are 5 among many of his achievements we may like to ponder:

Yar’adua brought to end the militancy in the Niger Delta region when he invited the militants to Aso Rock and urged them to lay down their arms. He also kick-started the amnesty program which re-absorbed the militants into the society and rehabilitated them ending the years of crisis in the region.

Yar’adua reversed the fraudulent sale of Nigeria’s assets by the Olusegun Obasanjo government, which sold the assets to cronies of Obasanjo at giveaway prices. The late Nigerian leader discarded political loyalty for the sake of the nation and reversed the sales which could have mortgaged Nigeria’s future into the hands of a few.

Yar’adua pioneered the policy of returning unspent funds to the national treasury at the end of the fiscal year. He is also the first president in the history of Nigeria to declare his assets before assuming office. These policies and actions endeared him to the majority of Nigerians.

Yar’adua courageously released the N10 billion Lagos state local government council funds withheld by the Obasanjo administration because of political differences with then governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Yar’adua’s government initiated the dredging of the River Niger bank, Abuja metro line, Abuja-Kaduna rail, and the Abuja-Kano rail.

If these among so many others can be attained in 3 years of his administration, one would wonder what the intention and aim of the successive administrations have been.

No single successive president can boast of half the milestone of his short-lived tenure. But in a quest for a loving leader of the people, who has the interest of the masses at heart, who has a track record of the selfless, people-centred form of governance, who can comfortably in his capacity match the strides of late Musa Yar’Adua, the Kano born Engineer Rabi’u Musa, popularly known as Kwankwaso, would come to mind.

Kwankwaso was the first governor of Kano State in the fourth republic who was elected under the People’s Democratic Party. Understanding the critical relevance of Youth development to the growth of Kano, Kwankwaso founded 26 youth empowerment institutes that are still functioning to date.

As regards education, under Kwankwaso’s administration, over 3500 undergraduate and postgraduate students from different disciplines were awarded scholarships for higher studies overseas.

In a bid to address the educational backwardness of the state, Musa Kwankwaso declared free and compulsory education at all levels in the state, also constructed over 1000 kwankwasiyya classroom blocks, and provided free primary feeding and uniforms to primary students. The teachers were not left out of his impact as he promoted over 30,000 primary school teachers.

In the health sector, his administration constructed the general hospital at madobi, and ensured the provision of hospital equipment and authentic drugs, especially for women and children.

It’s also safe to say Kwankwaso’s heavy investment in infrastructural development in Kano further repositioned kano to its almost lost glory as the “Center for Commerce”. Among the infrastructural transformation recorded under Kwankwaso are: 3 flyovers at kofar nassarawa, Ibrahim Taiwo road and M/muhd way, Kabuga underpass, Gadon kaya underpass, Kwankwasiyya city, Bandirawo city; Dualization of sheikh jafar road; Rehabilitation of k/naisa galadanci road, Gwale gudindi road, 5km roads 44 LG, provision of streetlights.

Other successes recorded under Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso include: the recruitment of over 8000 indigenes in Kano State, donation of complete sporting equipment to over 2000 athletes within the state, donation of over 100 brand new Toyota to police and other security agencies, and over 1000 Toyota Hilux to various ministries and parastatals in the state, donation of buses for girl child initiative, TATA buses for tertiary colleges.

At the Local Government level, Kwankwaso established microfinance banks and mini markets in all the 44 local government areas in Kano State and the list goes on which is why in comparison we can confidently say, we have a Umar Musa Yar’adua in Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Therefore, in such a critical state that we’ve found ourselves as a nation, a state whereby getting it wrong in the upcoming 2023 general elections might mark a doom for our dear country, the pointers are clear enough as to who can salvage our country and put us back on the path of growth, peace, integrity, development, and unity.
