We are not fighting against the Government — OAU ASUU Chairman
NEWS DIGEST — The newly Elected Branch Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) OAU Ile Ife, Professor Anthony Ifechukwude Odiwe has said the Union is not fighting against the Federal Government but instead they are fighting for a better Educational System.
Professor Odiwe made the statement in an interview with the NewsDigest, adding that the focus of the struggle of the academic union is for a better education system.
In his words, Prof. Odiwe said, “The struggle isn’t against the Federal Government and they have to change the mentality. What we are basically fighting for is a better and standard educational sector in Nigeria with a better facilities”
“We want to be ranked like all other universities they send their children to. That what we are asking for, we are not asking for anything too much for the government to do. It’s unfortunate that they do not see it that way. It would have been better if the press could pay a visit to our classes and laboratories to see what it looks like and see that we are not just sitting down and creating issues or problems just out of the blues. We have been asking for the same thing overtime and nothing is been done to it.”
The newly elected chairman of ASUU OAU branch pointed out that the ASUU obeyed the ruling of the court to suspend the 8-month-old strike.
“Our struggle isn’t just about money. For every of our strike, struggle, we are proffering solutions. We have given solutions on how to get money on how to fund the educational sector. The government should look inward on how the lingering issues can be attended to.
“Probably because they don’t have their wards in Nigerian Universities that why they don’t care about the state of the sector. The problem is not ASUU. The fight is for everyone. It’s not benefitting us directly.
“ASUU is a law abiding union that was why the strike was suspended at the initial and we would continue to be law abiding,” he added.
It should be recalled that Professor Anthony Ifechukwude Odiwe from the Department of Botany was sworn into the office on the 18th of November, 2022 as the new ASUU OAU Branch Chairman.
