NEWS DIGEST–One of the major problem we are facing in Nigeria as a nation, which is dragging us backward is that we respect certificate and condemn all other craft which is a product of excessive reasoning, we so much respect credentials which from time memorial can be compromised as we can see from the recent certificate scandal concerning the former minister of Finance. Many people holding certificates can’t even defend or put it into practice because many are gotten through examination malpractice, corruption etc.
I think what we should always be looking after is someone who will deliver a perfect and accurate job. The first question we should always be asking is can you do it? In Nigeria today we have lost most of our best hands because they don’t have degree or any certification as the case maybe. In this part of the world education is a privilege some people don’t have the chance or opportunity to go to school due to financial problem, or unfavorable learning environment etc. this shouldn’t mean the unprivileged ones are totally useless because of the lack of formal education. We all have seen so many electrical engineers who can’t even do an ordinary house electrical wiring but the so called unprivileged who don’t have any certificate is perfect on. So many relevant example which we all know.
So why are this talented people denied the chance to grow and achieve their potentials? So many people who have made heartwarming researches without been in a class room. To grow as a nation we have to support people who have the knowledge, talent and craftsmanship because they all play a vital role in Nation Building. According to Jelani aliyu a top car designer who works with general electric motors in USA said;
I have been working with General Motors for a long period of years but they have never ask me about my certificate and as at the time I was seeking for the employment they asked me can you do it? I said yes and they gave me a chance and I proved myself.
and now the world in generally befitting from Jelani’s knowledge. And also many great people in the world who have never been to any school to learn what they do and they became expert in what they do even without formal education people like Bill gate, Steve Jobs etc. and they have all become famous, extremely rich in the world of technology and the world in general is benefiting from their knowledge not certificate. In other developed countries of the world unlike Nigeria they respect talent, craft, innovation and knowledge that’s why there economy is always thriving because everybody is involve.
Investing in skills is so vital to a country’s economic growth and competitiveness. In particular education system must be reoriented towards producing youth who have both strong fundamental skills as well as specific skills so as to be self suffiecient.
