For stealing a phone, go to jail for 1 year, court tells a man

NEWS DIGEST–An Ilorin Magistrates Court, today sentenced one Mr. Samuel Asiwaju to one year imprisonment with option of N5,000 fine for stealing an Android Phone.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Kayode Roda, told the court that Asiwaju was arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Ilorin.
He said that the arrest followed a complaint on Aug. 27, by one Fabiyi Oluwashina of Fate Tanke Area, Ilorin, that Asiwaju allegedly stole his Android Phone.
Roda said the convict appeared before the court on a one-count charge of theft, an offence that was contrary to Section 288 of the Penal Code.
According to the complainant, on Aug. 23, he went to a barbers shop at Tanke Area to charge his Android Phone.
Oluwashina complained that while he left and returned later it was unplugged from the socket and carted away by an unknown person.
He said, however, that he strongly suspected the accused person and thus logged a complaint against him.
The Prosecutor said that during the investigation at the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department Ilorin it was revealed that the said Android Phone was recovered from the convict.
When the charged was read to Asiwaju he told the court that he was an orphan, pleaded guilty and begged for mercy.
Roda, therefore, prayed the court to grant the accused summary trial since he pleaded guilty to the charge against him.
In her ruling, Magistrate Jumoke Bello sentenced the accused accordingly.(NAN)
