BREAKING: Buhari Declares June 12 as new Democracy Day
NEWS DIGEST – President Muhammadu Buhari in an unprecedented decision has announced that henceforth June 12, will nationally be celebrated as Democracy day.
June 12 before now has been a day celebrated to honor late MKO Abiola whose election was annulled by the then Millitary leader ,Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in controversial circumstances .
In a message obtained by THE NEWS DIGEST, Buhari said the decision was reached after due consultations.
“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.
We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993 elections.”
He also awarded Grand Commander Order of Niger to the then Vice Presidential aspirant Baba Gana Kinigbe .
President Buhari announced that henceforth Democracy day will be celebrated on June 12 as against the usual May 29.
