The tragic incident, which occurred over the weekend, claimed the lives of two young ladies, who were postgraduate students at the University of Lagos.
Yesterday, new facts on the issue emerged, stating that the late Funmi Odusina, one of the victims, drowned while trying to rescue her friend, Adesola Ogunmefun.
It was reported that they had been celebrating the birthday of a friend at Elegushi Beach, Lekki, when a heavy tide came and swept them away. Funmi was said to have swam towards Adesola, who was drowning, but unfortunately passed out.
She was eventually rescued, alongside the birthday celebrant, by local divers who rushed them to Lagos Island General Hospital, which is where she passed away.
A relative of Funmi came out to describe her actions as an act of bravery, saying, “On that fateful day, I was with her parents when her mother’s telephone rand. The caller identified himself as a staff of the Island General Hospital and informer her that Funmi was rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital.
“Immediately, she called someone at Funmi’s hostel in UNILAG to confirm the incident. We rushed to the hospital only to be told that she had died and that her body had been deposited in the hospital’s mortuary.
“Since the incident no one has been stable because Funmi was a brilliant student. She graduated from Covenant University two years ago. Saying we would miss her in an understatement.”
In honour of the late students, it is reported that their course mates, attended school dressed in black clothes to mourn them.
One student who gave his name as Nwado said, “As you can see, we are wearing black to mourn the death of our colleagues. We are supposed to be writing our examinations together, but unfortunately they are not with us.”
Other students claimed to have pleaded with the university’s management, to postpone the examination, to honour the departed souls of their course mates, unfortunately this appeal was not granted.
